Bass Fishing Colors

Bass Fishing Lures

Crankbaits – bass fishing lures that are available in a multitude of colors and can be used at a variety of water depths such as near the surface, mid levels, deep and bumping the bottom. Crankbaits can have a lip or be lipless, depending on the depth and action it is designed for. Crankbaits typically are shaped like very thick minnows. Bass are attracted to these lures because of their movement through the water when reeled or "cranked" back in.

Swimbaits – bass fishing lures that are usually very streamlined and sectioned throughout the body to provide an almost exact duplication of the swimming movement of a shad or minnow. They are usually colored like the bait fish they are modeled after. Swimbaits can have one single hook, a treble hook or a series of hooks attached to them. Swimbaits are usually made of hard or soft plastic material.

Jerkbaits
– minnow shaped bass fishing lures offered in multiple colors and typically heavier than swimbaits. Jerkbaits are not designed to have a smooth retrieval like other baits, rather they are designed to have irregular movement and action that mimics an injured bait fish in the water.

Topwater lures
– colorful bass fishing lures designed for the surface of the water. These lures are moved across the waters surface to attract bass that are feeding just below the surface. Topwater lures may be poppers, rattlebaits or buzz baits that actually use their movement through the water to create sound or vibration or they may have propellers that make splashing sounds as they cut through the waters surface.

Spinnerbaits
- fishing lures that have one or more metal blades shaped so as to twist or spin like a propeller as the lure is retrieved thus creating varying degrees of flash, color and vibration that mimic bait fish preferred by bass. Popular types are in-line spinners, safety pin spinners, and tail-spinners.

Spoon Baits
– a fishing lure consisting of a painted or bright spoon-shaped piece of metal that can be in-line with or swiveled above one or more hooks. This bass fishing lure revolves as it is drawn through the water thus creating flash, color and vibration. Spoon baits can be used in a cast and retrieve fashion or when trolling.

Jigs
– bass fishing lures with a colored metal head that is usually colorfully skirted around the bottom and has one or more hooks. This style of bass fishing lure is usually worked with a jiggling or jerking motion on or near the bottom as it is drawn through the water to attract bass. Soft plastic baits are usually added to the main hook of these lures to increase their effectiveness.

Plugs – colorful bass fishing lures usually made of wood, to which one or more sets of treble hooks are attached. Plugs are usually torpedo or oval in shape and may have one end concaved shaped depending on whether it is designed for topwater or sub-surface use. Plugs are usually worked with a stop and go retrieve or a jerk and stop action. A plug with a concaved end is designed to make a popping sound on the surface of the water when jerked.

Soft Plastic Baits
– single or multi colored bass fishing lures, usually made from plastisol, that are molded into natural  bass feeding food items such as small snakes, worms, shad, minnows, crawfish, frogs, lizards etc. Soft plastic lures usually have softener added by the manufacturer for maximum action and to give a soft bite feel for increased hold time of the bait by the bass. These bass fishing lures can be worked in a variety of methods dependent upon lure shape and rigging.
